Thandiwe Newton’s dramatic exit after row with Channing Tatum throws Magic Mike 3 filming into chaos
Thandiwe Newton has been forced to deny rumours she quit the filming of a new Hollywood blockbuster following a “vicious” row with her co-star, Channing Tatum.
Production of Magic Mike’s Last Dance, the third film in the franchise, was thrown into chaos after the Line of Duty actress dramatically left midway through the project.
A spokesman claimed the 49-year-old stepped away to “deal with family matters”.
But it has been reported her position became “untenable” after she fell out with co-star Channing Tatum, 41, on set in Paddington, west London.
It was claimed they had an “unimaginably vicious” argument over Will Smith’s behaviour at the Oscars, when he slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage.
An unnamed crew member said: “They fell out over the debacle at the Oscars. I was on set… It was a tense exchange of words, but suddenly it escalated – Channing got into this car and he disappeared.”
A representative for Miss Newton strongly denied the reports, describing them as “completely inaccurate”, while a source close to the production claimed Tatum – who is also a producer on the film – had been supportive of the actress’s decision to leave.
She will be replaced by Frida actress Salma Hayek, 55, and the scenes starring Miss Newton will have to be reshot.
The move could leave the production company footing a bill of tens of thousands of pounds.
Crew members told The Sun that the delays to filming had already cost them more than £4,000 in lost wages.
A Warner Bros spokesman said: “Thandiwe Newton has made the difficult decision to production of Warner Bros Pictures’ Magic Mike’s Last Dance to deal with family matters.”
No further details were given. The previous Magic Mike films, which are loosely based on Tatum’s experiences as a teenage stripper in Florida, have both enjoyed commercial success, taking around $397 million at the box office combined.
It inspired a popular spin-off stage show, which has been performed in London, Berlin and Las Vegas.
The third and latest film is set to premiere exclusively on HBO Max but the release date has not been announced.
A spokesman for Tatum declined to comment.
