LOAN stars Sam Long and Sean Roughan have spoken glowingly about their time with Drogheda United after the club today confirmed that they have returned to English League 1 outfit Lincoln City.
he Drogheda Independent revealed yesterday that the two 19-year-olds had played their last game for the Boynesiders and would be going back to their parent club, dealing a big blow to manager Kevin Doherty who is unable to sign any replacements until the transfer window opens on July 1st.
Long kept clean sheets in wins against Dundalk, UCD and Shamrock Rovers and had two other standout performances in 1-1 draws against Derry City and Bohemians which saw him nominated for the SSE Airtricity League Player of the Month for May and called into the Scotland U21 squad.
Roughan, who played both at left-back and centre-half, made an immediate impact and his stay at the club also included a nomination for the SSE Airtricity League Player of the Month for March after a number of impressive displays, including a Man of the Match performance in the win over Dundalk.
Long said: “My time with the team has been great. Everyone made me feel so welcome and my time flew by with the lads. There’s a lot to be excited about with the squad that Kevin has got and the results of recent weeks show the quality of the squad and what the lads are able to achieve.
“The staff have been amazing with me, helping me to grow as a player and as a person. Thank you for the trust you put in me which allowed me to grow into my role and show what I can do.
“To the fans, thank you. Every game at United Park you have made yourselves heard and that is what drives us on. Thank you for everything, Drogs.”
U19 international Roughan added: “I’ve loved every second playing for Drogheda. From the minute I walked through the door I felt at home. I can’t thank the fans, players, coaching staff, and backroom staff enough.
“It’s been a pleasure to call myself a Drog. I wish everyone involved in the club the best for the future and the season. Up the Drogs!”
Drogheda United said in a statement: “Everyone at the club would like to thank both Sam and Sean for their contributions in claret and blue and wish both the very best for the future.”
