Japan’s ‘Drive My Car’ wins Academy Award for best international film

Riding on a wave of critical acclaim and prizes, Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “Drive My Car” won the Academy Award for best international feature film in Los Angeles on Sunday.

During his acceptance speech, Hamaguchi thanked the members of the academy and his cast, including lead actor Hidetoshi Nishijima, in English, undeterred by an attempt by the band to interrupt his speech midway. He concluded his remarks by complimenting the driving skills of lead actress Toko Miura, who was behind the wheel of the film’s signature Saab 900 as a chauffeur and confidant to the troubled theater director played by Nishijima.
