Buckle up Perth musical fans, another 90s throwback musical is set to make its debut for local audiences with a theatre superstar part of the cast.
Kirby Burgess — who has starred in musicals The Wedding Singer, Dirty Dancing, Grease and Bring It On — has been announced as part of the cast and will add another movie to musical role when she stars in the upcoming Cruel Intentions: The 90s Musical.
“It is like it’s got the soundtrack of the 90s that ranges … whether you were that grungy, baggy pants, your wallets on a chain … or if you’re that bubble gum pop, inflatable bags and butterfly clips. It’s got the music from both sides of the 90s representing everyone’s tastes and then in the middle, you’ve got this dark, sexy, intriguing story,” Burgess told AAA.
“I think it’s a show that’s really going to take people by surprise. It’s a great night out but you also get an insight into how far we’ve come as a socialist society.”
After starring in several musicals based on famous and beloved movies, Burgess said actors needed to step up their game when doing shows with which people were already familiar.
“I love doing these kinds of shows (where) people have this nostalgic experience before they walked into the theatre,” she said.
“With that comes a lot of responsibility as well because you want to give them all those moments that people remember from the film, but you also don’t want to give them just a copy where they may as well just stay home and watch the movie.”
Based on the cult 1999 film which was re-released to cinemas in 2019 and currently has a new TV series in development, Cruel Intentions: The 90s Musical has been praised by original cast members Sarah Michelle Gellar, Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair.
Burgess will play Gellar’s role, which made the actor famous, as scheming seductress Kathryn.
The theatre star said she couldn’t wait to put a modern spin on the iconic character.
“I think as a society we’re a little more educated, and so I get to see her from this new world where we have a little bit more sexual equality between men and women and a little more of an overall understanding of the inequality (between genders),” Burgess said.
The musical has a killer 90s soundtrack from the likes of Placebo and The Verve right through to Britney Spears, *NSYNC and Christina Aguilera.
Cruel Intentions: The 90s Musical begin its Perth season at the Regal Theatre on August 24.
