Bantrel left the downtown 15 years ago for new office space on Glenmore Trail S.W. In July, the major provider of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services across Canada is moving back to the core to take four floors in Stephen Avenue Place.
“The vision of Bantrel is to be the preferred integrated engineering, procurement and construction company by developing strong relationships with clients and employees,” says company president Darren Curran. “We see the move to Calgary’s downtown core as a great way to strengthen and foster those very relationships simply by being together. This is especially important as we emerge from the isolation of the pandemic and celebrate time in person.”
Curran joined Bantrel as president in 2018, but he first worked there after earning his mechanical engineering degree at the University of Calgary. With a dream to work overseas, he left to gain experience on major projects in Bahrain, China and South Korea before returning home to start a family.
He spent five years with Husky and another decade with Cenovus before accepting the call to return to Bantrel, heading up the company’s executive team and staff in Calgary as well as its offices in Edmonton and Toronto.
Of a total staff of 640 working across the country, 250 are based here and will make the move to the new offices downtown.
Curran says he is excited to return to the heart of the city’s energy business. The company conducted important refreshing sessions with employees and clients in which relationships played a huge part — they confirmed that the core is the place to be for ease of contact with clients, whether it be a quick coffee, Petroleum Club lunch or a relaxing beer after work.
Building trust and networking are essentials that — guided by Bantrel’s vision, values and covenants — help it achieve excellence in all it does.
With help of Josh Hamill and his team at Savills, Bantrel chose to take four floors, totalling 61,000 square feet, of the recently renovated Stephen Avenue Place, citing the professional assistance by owner Slate Asset Management plus the first-class amenities provided.
Bantrel staff will have use of a conference centre with full kitchen, well-equipped gym and spin-cycle studio, as well as Major Tom restaurant on the 40th floor and the soon-to-be-opened 380-seat restaurant on the main floor.
Bechtel Corp. and Calgary-based McCaig P&C Holdings are Bantrel’s largest shareholders. New projects mean the company is hiring for a number of positions; currently 40 are posted, primarily seeking staff in construction, project management, design and other technical areas.
Bantrel has been involved in many major projects since it was formed in 1983 and continues to announce more significant awards.
The largest of its recent wins is to provide design, engineering and construction management services to BHP for the $7.5-billion Stage 1 of its massive Jansen SI project in southeastern Saskatchewan. It includes an underground potash mine and the associated surface infrastructure, which includes a processing facility, product storage and an automated loading system.
Bantrel has also been named as a key sub-vendor for the Metrolinx Ontario Line in Toronto.
Bringing his Calgary team together in one modern facility will be a huge plus for the company.
